Ranchi, Nov. 5 -- BJP's Jharkhand MLA and former minister C.P. Singh on Wednesday expressed the view that the Congress had "historically politicized" the national song Vande Mataram for minority appeasement.

Addressing a press conference on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram composed by Bengali poet and novelist Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875 as a dedication to the Motherland, Singh alleged that as part of its appeasement politics, the Congress had even omitted portions of the song under pressure from the Muslim League.

"But today's India is a new India. Vande Mataram is not of any religion or party, it is our national song and a symbol of devotion and gratitude to the motherland," the Ranchi MLA said.
