Hyderabad, Nov. 18 -- Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao today criticised the state Congress government for failing to conduct local body elections on time, alleging that the delay has resulted in nearly Rs 4,000 crore in central funds being withheld.
Speaking at a press conference here, Rao said the term of sarpanchas ended over 21 months ago, leaving panchayat bodies without elected councils. Under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, conducting these elections is mandatory, he reminded. Because the state did not follow the timeline, the 15th Finance Commission funds meant for panchayat development were halted, he said.
"These funds will be released only after elections are held and governing bodies are in place," he said....
