Hyderabad, July 29 -- Telangana Irrigation Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy today affirmed the Congress government's commitment to farmers' welfare, citing the Nagarjuna Sagar multipurpose project whose foundations were laid by India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Addressing the media here, the minister said the Congress has historically championed the cause of agriculture. He also pointed out ah the project was launched during the Prime Ministerial tenure of Indira Gandhi.

"The modern temples of India, envisioned by Nehru, continue to serve as a lifeline for both Telugu states," he said.
