Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 13 -- The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) on Tuesday registered a crucial victory in the special election to the newly constituted Vizhinjam ward of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, dealing a significant setback to the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in a keenly fought civic contest that had wide political ramifications.

According to official results, Congress candidate K.H. Sudheer Khan, representing the UDF, won the Vizhinjam seat by a narrow margin of 83 votes, polling 2,902 votes.

The LDF candidate N. Naushad finished a close second with 2,819 votes, while Sarvashaktipuram Binu, the NDA candidate backed by the BJP, secured 2,437 votes.
