Shimla, Aug. 19 -- Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur today admitted in the Assembly that the Congress Government has shut down as many as 1,353 primary and middle schools in the state, citing directions from the Centre and the so-called "Gujarat Model" of education.

Replying to a query raised by BJP MLA Randhir Sharma during question hour, Thakur said that schools with no students or only one student were merged or closed.

"After this exercise, around 1,424 teachers were spared for redeployment. Earlier, 3,600 schools were functioning with only a single teacher, and 350 schools had no teachers at all," the Minister informed the House.
