Mysuru, Nov. 7 -- Accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of bowing to pressure from the powerful sugar mill lobby, union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday charged that the Karnataka government was shirking its responsibility towards protesting sugarcane farmers by writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of taking a decision on the demand for higher sugarcane prices.

"The Chief Minister may be succumbing to the lobby of sugar mill owners, who are also Ministers in his government," Kumaraswamy alleged, speaking to reporters in Mysuru.

"He should not surrender to pressure by the sugar lobby, but work towards protecting the interests of farmers," he added.
