Belagavi, Sept. 12 -- A tense stand-off between Congress and BJP workers over the election of directors to the Primary Agriculture Cooperative (PAC) Society in Kittur, Belagavi district, today spiralled into violence, forcing authorities to postpone the polls.
Eyewitnesses and officials said trouble began when rumours spread that Congress functionaries, who were allegedly in the minority in the PAC, were trying to stall the election process.
BJP supporters accused aides of Congress MLA Babasaheb Patil of attempting to abduct society secretary R Bhimappa to prevent him from conducting the vote as scheduled.
