New Delhi, Oct. 27 -- In a significant development marking the continuity of judicial tradition, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has formally recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor, following the established convention of seniority.

The recommendation was conveyed in a letter to the union Law Ministry earlier this week. Justice Surya Kant, presently the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after CJI Gavai, is expected to assume office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India upon Gavai's retirement in November 2025.
