Manila/ New Delhi, Oct. 12 -- The Philippines and China are trading accusations following a maritime collision in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea on Sunday, escalating tensions in the strategic waterway.

According to Philippine authorities, a Chinese coast guard ship deliberately rammed the BRP Datu Pagbuaya, a government vessel, and fired water cannons near Thitu Island (Pag-asa Island).

Three Philippine government vessels had been anchored near the island as part of a programme to protect local fishermen.

The incident caused minor damage but no injuries. Manila described the actions as a "clear threat" and vowed to continue its operations in the area.
