Bijapur, May 9 -- Amid an intensified search operation by security forces in the Karregutta area on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border, the Maoist party has announced a six-month ceasefire.

The announcement was made through a letter issued on Thursday evening, bearing the name of senior Maoist leader Jagan.

The statement comes at a time when there is growing public pressure for peace talks between the Maoist organisation and the government.

The letter stated that in view of the increasing demand for peace talks between the Maoist party and the government from the public, democrats, people's organisations, and most political parties in Telangana, the Maoists will observe a six-month ceasefire.
