Chandigarh, Nov. 23 -- The Central government is preparing to introduce a bill in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, seeking major changes to Chandigarh's administrative status.

The proposal aims to shift the union Territory from the provisions of Article 239 to Article 240 of the Constitution, making Chandigarh a completely centrally governed region.

Currently functioning as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh is administered by the Governor of Punjab, who also serves as the UT Administrator. If the bill is passed, this structure may change, and a Lieutenant Governor, similar to the one in Delhi, could be appointed.
