New Delhi, Sept. 24 -- The union government has filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court challenging last year's landmark judgment that vested the power to levy taxes on mineral rights exclusively with the states.

The move signals the Centre's renewed attempt to reclaim legislative competence over mineral taxation, which it says is crucial for ensuring uniformity in the country's fiscal and economic framework.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed a Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta today that the petition had been filed "with all seriousness," stressing that the issue is of national importance.
