Chandigarh, Nov. 23 -- The Central government has stepped back from reports suggesting an imminent change in Chandigarh's administrative status. The Ministry of Home Affairs has clarified that there is neither a final decision on the proposal nor any plan to introduce such a bill in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
The ministry stated that the matter is still under consideration and will be taken forward only after thorough consultation with all the stakeholders. Earlier, it was speculated that the Centre might introduce legislation to shift Chandigarh from Article 239 to Article 240 of the Constitution, a move that could grant the center complete control over the union Territory.
