Kyiv, Feb. 24 -- Friedrich Merz, who leads the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc, on Sunday called achieving Germany's independence from the Unites States his "absolute priority," saying that the future of Ukraine is "relatively indifferent" to the US.

"It will be an absolute priority for me that we achieve independence from the US. It seems clear from the statements made last week that the US is relatively indifferent to the future of Ukraine," Merz said during the Berliner Runde program on German broadcaster ARD.

At the same time, Merz said that it is too early to raise the issue of deploying German troops on Ukrainian territory as part of a peacekeeping mission.
