Aizawl, April 22 -- Catholic educational institutions under the Aizawl Diocese remained closed on Tuesday as a mark of mourning following the death of Pope Francis on Monday.

The closure was in accordance with a communique issued by Bishop Stephen Rotluanga, who announced a nine-day mourning period (Novemdiales) as directed by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI).

Bishop Rotluanga said the observance is in keeping with Catholic tradition following the passing of a pope. While schools and colleges closed for a day, other mourning rituals will continue for nine days.
