Raigad, Jan. 4 -- A major tragedy was narrowly averted on Sunday morning when a car caught fire after crashing on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway near the Excel Fata area between Khed and Chiplun.

According to preliminary information, a Maruti Ertiga travelling towards Goa rammed into a road divider at around 5 am. Police suspect that the driver may have dozed off at the wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash.

Moments after the impact, smoke and flames erupted from the front portion of the car. Sensing the imminent danger, all occupants managed to exit the vehicle immediately, escaping unhurt. Within minutes, however, the fire spread rapidly and engulfed the entire car, reducing it and all belongings inside to ashes.
