New Delhi, Jan. 26 -- As the nation celebrated its 71st Republic day on Sunday, the national capital, gripped in patriotic fervour, was turned into a fortress with around 40,000 security personnel keeping a hawk-eyed vigil to thwart any untoward incident during the celebrations. The multi-layer security cover, this year, was enhanced, keeping in view the security threats and the ongoing anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests across the country. A special vigil was kept on the 8-km long parade route from Rajpath to Red Fort, police said. Sharpshooters and snipers were deployed atop high-rise buildings to keep a watch on the parade route.
