Thrissur, Dec. 7 -- With hardly a few hours to go for the first phase of the Kerala local body elections, open campaigning ended peacefully on Sunday evening.

Seven southern districts from Thirunthapuram to Ernakulam go to the polls on December 9 in the first phase. The second phase of the election from Thrissur to Kasargod will be held on December 11. The counting will take place on December 13.

Kerala has 75,632 candidates in the fray for the local body elections. Of them, 39,604 are female candidates and 36,927 are male. There is also one transgender contesting in Thiruvananthapuram.

Malappuram has the highest number of candidates (8378), followed by Ernakulam (7374) and Wayanad has the lowest number (1967).
