Kolkata, Aug. 21 -- Tension erupted in central Kolkata after a group of Calcutta University students were allegedly assaulted by shopkeepers at Sealdah market, who branded them "Bangladeshis" for speaking Bengali.
The clash began yesterday when a boarder of the university's Carmichael Hostel went to buy mobile accessories under Sealdah Bridge. During bargaining, he was allegedly abused by a Hindi-speaking trader, who called him a "Bangladeshi."
The student returned with his classmates to protest, leading to a heated altercation.
According to witnesses, several hawkers then attacked the students with sticks, rods, and sharp weapons. Four students sustained injuries and were taken to the Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
