Kolkata, Nov. 22 -- The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal government and state-run Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to pay a compensation of Rs 30 lakh each to the families of the four workers, who died of asphyxiation while manually cleaning a manhole in south Kolkata in 2021.

A division bench of Calcutta High Court, comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Chaitali Chatterjee Das, also mandated a payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the injured workers in the mishap, stipulating that compensation be disbursed within three months to the families of the deceased and within two months to the injured.
