Tiruvannamalai, Dec. 3 -- Braving incessant rains, more than25 to 30 lakh people from various parts of India, witnessed the "Karthigai MahaDeepam", lit atop the 2,668-foot Annamalai Hills in this temple town, thisevening.

This year's Maha Deepam festival comes an year after landslip thatkilled seven people including children on December 1, 2024 due toheavy rains triggered by Cyclone Fengal in the town.

Forest staff from neighbouring divisions like Vellore and Tirupattur havebeen roped in to assist local forest teams to prevent people from climbingthe hills during the festival.

As has been the tradition, the district administration has declared a localholiday for the day in view of the Maha Deepam festival.
