Dhaka, Oct. 31 -- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the country's hardline Islamic party, the Jamaat - e - Islami to not meddle in the electoral process, given that the group had already opposed the country's independence.

Speaking at a programme at the Jatiya Press Club, the BNP official urged the party to respect the people's demand for a fair vote. "You opposed the Liberation War in 1971; please don't stand against the people's right to an election now," he said.

The Jamaat - which was recently revived - has historically denounced the creation of Bangladesh, and had even supported the Bengali genocide carried out by the Pakistani Army.
