Mumbai, Sept. 8 -- For the first time this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to scientifically discard and recycle Plaster of Paris (POP) Ganesh idols after immersion.
In the last 11 days, the civic body has collected as much as 1,982 metric tonnes of POP idols.
As per the directives of the High Court to prevent pollution of natural water bodies, the BMC had created 290 artificial lakes across Mumbai and the suburbs. After immersion, idols from these lakes are removed within a specified period and collected by the civic body for scientific treatment.
Meanwhile, the Solid Waste Management Department also made special efforts to collect floral offerings (Nirmalya).
