Mumbai, Feb. 15 -- Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately distorting his recent remarks on Tipu Sultan to incite communal tensions.

Clarifying his statement, Sapkal told reporters he had referred to the ideals of self-rule propagated by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and stated that Tipu Sultan drew inspiration from those ideals while fighting against the British. "My remarks were made in that historical context. Twisting them for political purposes reflects the BJP's malicious intent," he said.
