Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 23 -- Avian influenza (bird flu) has been confirmed in parts of Alappuzha and Kottayam districts of Kerala following laboratory tests conducted at a high-security facility in Bhopal, prompting authorities to step up surveillance and containment measures.

In Alappuzha district, the virus was detected in poultry in eight panchayats, including Nedumudi, Cheruthana, Karuvatta, Karthikappally, Ambalappuzha South, Punnapra South, Thakazhi, and Purakkad. Both ducks and chickens were found infected in these areas, officials said.

In Kottayam, bird flu cases were confirmed in four wards: Kuruppanthara, Manjoor, Kallupurackal, and Veloor, with infections reported mainly among ducks and chickens.
