Patna, May 27 -- The Congress on Tuesday said that women of Bihar would be given a monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 if the party is voted to power in the next assembly elections due later this year.

Party's national spokesperson and in-charge of social media Supriya Shrinate told media that Congress has always worked hard to ensure economic and social empowerment of women.

"Former Delhi chief minister late Sheela Dikshit was the first in the country to roll out a financial assistance scheme for women", Shrinate said, adding the Dikshit government had started the scheme to deposit Rs 36,000 in bank accounts of mothers on the birth of a girl child in 2008. Girls were also being paid Rs 25,000 for their studies till class 12, she recalled.
