Kolkata, Feb. 20 -- Bengali writer Manishankar Mukhopadhyay, widely known by his pen name Shankar, passed away on Friday afternoon at a city hospital.

He was 93.

The celebrated author had been suffering from multiple age-related ailments and was admitted to hospital around two weeks ago after his health deteriorated sharply.

Doctors said he had stopped taking food and had become increasingly frail. He breathed his last at around 12.45 pm.

Hospital physician Sudipta Mitra said the writer was admitted on February 4 following a fresh decline in his condition.

"He had been under treatment here for the past two weeks. He passed away on Friday afternoon," the doctor said.

Mukhopadhyay had been unwell for several months.
