Kolkata, Nov. 20 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to immediately halt the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state after a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in North Bengal allegedly committed suicide due to "unbearable work pressure".
"Deeply shocked and saddened. Today again, we lost a Booth Level Officer in Mal, Jalpaiguri, an anganwadi worker who took her own life under the unbearable pressure of the ongoing SIR work," Banerjee, who is also chairperson and supreme leader of Trinamool Congress, said.
She claimed so far 28 people have already lost their lives since SIR began - some due to fear and uncertainty, others due to stress and overload.
