Kolkata, Nov. 24 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday congratulated senior Justice Sury Kant on assuming the office as the 53rd chief justice of India.

"Heartiest congratulations to Justice Surya Kant on assuming office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. His elevation marks an important moment for our Nation and we look forward to his stewardship strengthening the independence, integrity and accessibility of the Indian Judiciary," Banerjee said in a message.

Justice Surya Kant took oath as 53rd Chief Justice of India at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Monday. President Droupadi Murmu swore in Justice Kant at a simple ceremony.
