Kolkata, Sept. 17 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today greeted the people on the occasion of Viswakarma Puja and announced a state holiday in honour of migrant labourers.

Lord Viswakarma, regarded as the divine architect and creator of the universe, is being worshipped across the state with pomp and gaiety, especially in factories, the transport sector, and workshops associated with manufacturing and skilled labour.

Although extensively celebrated in the state, Viswakarma Puja had not previously been recognized as an official holiday.

A government notification has now declared September 17 a public holiday for all state government offices, local bodies, statutory bodies, boards, corporations, and undertakings.
