Bengal celebrates Poila Baisakh with traditional reverence and gaiety
Kolkata, April 15 -- West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday extended her greetings to mark Poila Baisakh, the beginning of Bengali new year 1432, with traditional reverence and gaiety as the people mostly flocked at Kalighat temple and Dakshineswar Kali temple to offer prayer for well-being.
Banerjee greeted the people and wished them to live in peace, prosperity and brotherhood.
The day is also observed as "Halkhata", which is a Bengali tradition of opening new ledger books for account-keeping on Pohela Boishakh by the Bengali business people as they visit the temples and offer prayers with new ledger books for fresh financial records.
