Chennai, April 10 -- The battlelines were clearly drawn as a total of 4,618 candidates are in the fray for the high octane elections to elect the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly on April 23 which would witness a multi-cornered contest.

As the deadline of withdrawals ended on Thursday, according to late last night update by the Election Commission, of the record 7,599 nominations filed (6216-men and 1380-women), a total of 4,618 papers were accepted, 2,640 were rejected and 521 candidates have withdrawn their nominations.

As of now 911 nominations were categorised as 'contesting' by the ECI and process of updating the numbers was still on.
