Madrid, June 12 -- FC Barcelona left back Gerard Martin has been forced to withdraw from the Spain Under-21 squad that is currently competing in the European Championships in Slovakia.
The defender had to be replaced during Spain's dramatic 3-2 win against the host on Wednesday after injuring his right hand and tests carried out by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Thursday showed he has dislocated the fifth metatarsal (his little finger).
The RFEF confirms that Martin has abandoned the squad to return to Barcelona for an operation that will mean he is unable to play for the rest of the tournament, although he should be fit to return to training when Barcelona returns to work on July 13.
