Dhaka, July 1 -- Bangladesh has witnessed a significant spike in dengue cases in June, with over 10,000 cases and 42 deaths registered so far this year.

In June, 5,951 more dengue cases were recorded after 1,773 people were infected with the viral disease in May.

The figures, reported by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health yesterday, showed that the number of dengue cases has surged to 10,296 so far this year.

A total of 429 fresh dengue cases, including 87 in the capital Dhaka, were reported in the 24 hours till 8:00 a.m. local time yesterday, the DGHS data showed.
