Dhaka, Feb. 12 -- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has emerged as the frontrunner, maintaining a steady lead over the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance, as vote counting progressed across 299 constituencies, where elections were held today.

Early counts from local TV stations showed the BNP leading in 50 to 78 seats, while the Jamaat-led coalition was leading in 18 to 38 seats.

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has unofficially secured wins in both the Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies, according to lastest reports.

Opinion polls prior to the election also positioned BNP as the frontrunner forforming the next government in Dhaka.
