Rio De Janeiro, Oct. 19 -- At least 15 people were killed and several others injured in a bus accident on Friday night in the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco, according to the Federal Highway Police (PRF).

Preliminary investigation indicates that the accident occurred on a highway connecting the municipalities of Paranatama and Saloa, in Pernambuco's Agreste region.

PRF officer Luciano Holanda said that the vehicle, carrying more than 30 passengers, was a tourist bus with a valid charter license.

Local fire department dispatched five rescue vehicles to the scene after receiving a call around 8 p.m. local time (2300 GMT).
