Guwahati, Nov. 28 -- A day after the Assam Assembly passed a legislation to prohibit polygamy, the opposition parties, including the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), on Friday dubbed it a "political gimmick" to polarise the voters ahead of next year's elections.

State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had tabled the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 on Tuesday in the House, and it was passed on Thursday.

The legislation seeks to make polygamy a criminal offence with seven to ten years of imprisonment and aims to ensure a compensation mechanism for the victims. The Bill was passed by the Assembly on Thursday, and it will now be sent for Presidential assent.
