Guwahati, March 26 -- A total of 789 candidates were left in the fray after scrutiny of nominations for the 126-member Assam Assembly, the polling for which is due on April 9, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Thursday.
According to the ECI, 817 aspirants had filed their candidature since the beginning of the nomination process for the polls to elect a new government in the northeastern state.
The last date for filing nominations was March 23, following which the returning officers (ROs) began the scrutiny that concluded on Wednesday.
The scrutiny was done in the presence of the candidates or their agents and the entire process was video-graphed for ensuring utmost transparency.
