Guwahati, July 2 -- The Assam police's drive against the illegal beef sale continued for a second day on Wednesday in different parts of Assam leading to seizure of about 1732 kgs of meat, suspected to be beef, and the arrest of 196 people within two days.

The raids were carried out on Wednesday in several parts of Assam including in hotels, restaurants and slaughterhouses for violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act 2021. The act prohibits selling of beef within a five km radius of a religious institutions and its transportation.

"The drive was initiated across the state to check reported incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and selling of beef in restaurants in an unauthorised manner," said a senior police officer.
