Guwahati, Nov. 29 -- The Assam government on Saturday tabled the Group of Minister's Report on extending ST status to six communities, and recommended a three-fold classification of Scheduled Tribes in Assam which includes the ST (Plains), the ST (Hills) and the ST (Valley).

While the ST plains and ST Hills continues to cover the existing tribal communities residing in the plains and Hills, the ST (Valley) will cover the six communities which includes the Ahoms, Chutias, Moran, Mataks, Koch Rajbongshis and the Tea Tribes and Adivasis.

The GoM report said that the three-fold structure will allow reservations in parliament, the legislative assembly and local bodies to be reorganized without reducing the current entitlements of ST (P) and ST...
