Guwahati, Oct. 8 -- As thousands of Adivasi people took to the streets today in Assam's Tinsukia district seeking Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Adivasi and Tea Tribes community, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the demand was genuine and added that even the BJP workers will join the protests.
Six communities in Assam - Tai Ahoms, Morans, Mottocks, Chutias, Koch-Rajbongshis and Tea Tribes - have been demanding ST status for a long time.
In Tinsukia district of eastern Assam, huge protests erupted during the day, as thousands of Adivasis and tea-garden workers gathered at the Hukan Pukhuri playground demanding ST status, land ownership rights, and a wage hike.
