Imphal, Feb. 19 -- Assam Rifles organised a wreath-laying ceremony at Litan in Ukhrul District on Wednesday to honour the brave hearts of 21 Sikhs who had laid down their lives in service of the Nation on 19 February 1982.
In February 1982, 21 Sikh Battalion was deployed in a counter-insurgency role in Manipur.
Assam Rifles official said on 19 February 1982, Major Ranvir Singh Shekhawat led a convoy of three vehicles transporting personnel and supplies from Imphal to Ukhrul.
At about 10 AM, while navigating a bend near Namthilok, about 34 kilometer from Imphal, the convoy was ambushed by heavily armed insurgents. The attack resulted in the fatality of 19 valiant soldiers.
