Pune, Sept. 11 -- In India, the magnitude of the young people dying by suicide is unfortunately very high, with approximately 160 youths dying by suicide daily, said Dr Naresh Purohit, Adviser-National Mental Health Programme.

In a release issued here on occassion of World Suicide Prevention Day today, the Disaster Mental Health expert said that suicide is the third leading cause of death among those aged 15-29 years and is estimated to claim over 7.2 lakh lives every year, according to the World Health Organization.

The suicide rate (number of suicides per one lakh population) stands at 24.7 percent in the country, he informed.
