Chittoor, Nov. 13 -- In a freak incident, elephants trampled a farmer to death at Kurmanipalli village of Kuppam mandal of the district on Thursday.
Forest officials said that the deceased farmer Kittappa (64) was guarding his Jowar crop at the field from being destroyed by wild boars.
A herd of elephants destroyed his makeshift hut at the field. When he tried to escape, the elephants chased and trampled him to death. Divisional Forest officer Jaya Shankar visited the fields and assessed the situation.
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Forests K Pawan Kalyan expressed grief over the killing of a farmer by elephants.
He directed the officials to extend Rs 10 lakh ex gratia to the bereaved family.
