Ongole, Oct. 10 -- In a major fire accident in a tobacco company, tobacco worth over Rs 200 crore was destroyed at Singarayakonda village, about 20 km from here on Friday.

Police said that flames erupted in the BK Tobacco Company in the morning. The flames spread all over the godown and destroyed hundreds of tonnes of processed tobacco.

Fire tenders rushed there from Ongole, Singarayakonda, Tanguturu, and Kandukur, with fire brigade personnel who battled with the flames for over five hours due to the scale of the factory and the presence of highly flammable tobacco stocks.

As per a preliminary assessment, thousands of tobacco bales, processing equipment and machinery worth over Rs 200 crore were destroyed in the fire. Electricity short-c...
