Kakinada, Feb. 8 -- In the biggest bank robbery in recent times, miscreants gained entry into the Uttarakanchi village branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Kakinada district in the wee hours of Thursday and looted Rs. 27.30 lakhs in cash and Rs. 1.5 crores worth of gold jewelry kept in lockers., police here said.

The miscreants used gas cutters to break open the windows and the lockers besides the cash chest. District Superintendent of Police Sathish Kumar has rushed to the spot and made discreet inquiries with the locals.

The district police clues team and the Dogs squad were also pressed into service.

Prathipadu police have registered a case and are investigating, police added.
