Kolkata, Feb. 28 -- After weeks of intense political and public debate, Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen has been included in the final list of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

However, the Election Commission has identified him as an "Overseas Indian" in the final document released on Saturday.

The issue had triggered a major controversy after the Election Commission of India sent a notice to Amartya Sen during the SIR process, seeking a hearing.

The move drew sharp criticism from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who repeatedly accused the commission of harassment.
