Mumbai, Feb. 10 -- Amid ongoing discussions on the possible merger of the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), legislators from the Ajit Pawar-led group have strongly demanded that Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar be appointed as the party's National President before the merger process is formally initiated.

Talks are currently underway between the Ajit Pawar faction and the Sharadchandra Pawar-led NCP regarding reunification. In addition, discussions between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue are said to have accelerated the merger process.

However, within the Ajit Pawar camp, the focus has shifted from the merger itself to the party's top leadership post.
