Chandigarh, Dec. 31 -- Haryana has got a new Director General of Police on the eve of the New Year, with the state government appointing 1992-batch IPS officer Ajay Singhal to the top post. The appointment follows the retirement of officiating DGP O.P. Singh on December 31.

The decision was taken from a panel of three senior IPS officers, finalised by the union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the DGP position.

Although former DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was the senior-most officer in the panel, he did not get the post due to his alleged mention in a suicide case involving late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar. Kapur was earlier sent on leave and removed from the DGP position following the controversy.
