Shimla, Nov. 7 -- The suspense over the appointment of a new Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president appears to be nearing its end. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has summoned six key contenders for the top post to Delhi for a high-level meeting on Wednesday. Party insiders indicate that the final decision on the new state Congress chief could be made within the next week.
National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will chair the meeting at 9:30 am, which is being convened at the request of Rahul Gandhi, who may also attend, sources said. The meeting is expected to be followed by one-on-one discussions between Kharge and the contenders before a final name is announced.
